Kevin and Judy:
artists who make documentaries.
Kevin and Judy have been married for over 30 years. They’ve raised a family of two sons and daughter and one granddaughter! Judy grew up on the East Coast (New York City) and Kevin from the ‘Wet’ coast (Bainbridge Island, WA).
Having lived on both coasts, they followed career paths in network news (Kevin) and health care (Judy). At 50 they shook things up and decided to take year abroad on a ‘Radical Sabbatical’, traveling and living in Europe, North Africa, and Asia.
They returned home in 2004, created a company, Heaven Scent Films, and co-produced two successful feature length documentaries…and today, still creating new documentary stories and new artwork while raising our amazing and talented granddaughter, Juliet. And the beat goes on…
Judy manages and produces film documentaries for Heaven Scent Films and co-produced the award-winning feature documentaries “Back to the Garden” and “CRAZYWISE.”
A lifelong fine artist, she has exhibited her paintings, created bronze sculpture for public installations, designed and produced recycled clothing and accessories through her company, Frim Fram Design, and has received both private and public grants and commissions. Judy is a retired registered nurse (RN) with credentials in holistic nursing and over 25 years experience as a clinical trial research consultant.
Kevin produces and directs documentaries about stories of social change. A Northwest-based producer/director and cameraman for over 30 years, he’s worked primarily with broadcast network television (NBC News, Dateline, CBS 60 Minutes, 48 hours, PBS, Rick Steve’s Europe, Bill Nye the Science Guy, etc.), corporate clients, and non-profit organizations to produce local and national news stories, magazines, documentaries, and international travel series.
Kevin and spouse, Judy Kaplan created Heaven Scent Films, and co-produced the award-winning, feature documentary “Back to the Garden, flower power comes full circle”, a 20 year then and now look at a community of off-grid, back to the landers, which premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival (2009), and aired on PBS stations locally and nationally.
“Back to the Garden” screened internationally at more than 30 filmfests, won several Best Doc awards, and was nominated for an Emmy Award (2012). It is distributed internationally by Gaia, Green Planet Films, and is available on Amazon, Kanopy, Itunes, Google Play, and more.
In 2017 Kevin and Judy co-executive produced and directed, together with Phil Borges and Julee Geier, the highly anticipated mental health-themed documentary CRAZYWISE. The film has been translated into 13 languages and has been awarded, honored, and screened internationally. CRAZYWISE world premiered at SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival) in 2017, showing at over 15 international film fests and counting.
